HARBOUR CONCERTS

Kodo “Soyogu, Utau, Tataku”

The EC 2022 Harbour Concerts kickoff with a matinee performance by Kodo. This 60-minute program will showcase the ensemble’s rich melodies and female voices with a cast of 15, ranging from veteran Distinguished Members to brand-new junior members. “Soyogu, Utau, Tataku” means “sway, sing, and beat a rhythm.” Come and enjoy the sound of the waves and the sea breeze as they meld with Kodo’s music, refreshing your mind, body and soul on a summer’s Saturday afternoon.

※Before this concert, Kodo will take the stage at 13:30 with taiko teams from Niigata Prefecture to perform Kodo One Earth Music piece “Haruka.” Show up early to enjoy this pre-show collaboration!

MIYAVI Special Night on Sado

MIYAVI x Hiromitsu Agatsuma x Kodo

For the grand finale of EC 2022, Kodo will be joined by two special guests: guitarist MIYAVI, making his EC debut; and shamisen player Hiromitsu Agatsuma, making his third appearance at EC. After appearing together at MIYAVI’s 2021 concert at Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera Temple, these three international artists will reunite at EC for their next, eagerly-awaited collaboration.

The sound of guitar, Tsugaru shamisen, and taiko are going to resonate around the globe when we gather to connect with the world on Sado Island this summer. May the sound bring everyone together, in person and in spirit.

“Shiver” Outdoor Cinema Screening & Talk Show

Film director Toshiaki Toyoda is a wizard: he took a catalog of music by bold contemporary musician Koshiro Hino and turned it into a spellbinding cinematic work, filmed entirely on Sado Island. The film features the Kodo ensemble, in a starring role for the first time, conjuring a rousing world of sound and imagery. We are excited to screen “Shiver” outdoors at EC 2022, coupled with a talk show with Toyoda, Hino, and Kodo, and a live performance by Kodo’s Kenta Nakagome and Yuta Sumiyoshi.
Immerse yourself in the world of “Shiver” in the perfect setting—on a summer’s night, under the stars by the sea, here on Sado Island.

Exadon for All with Sammy (Workshop Full)

Create Your Own Sound!

Get crafty at EC with locals Henrique and Masaru! Henrique can make anything at all out of bamboo, and Masaru is a carpenter who uses wood to transform spaces. They will share their skills with you, helping you make a one-of-a kind instrument using Sado-grown bamboo and wood. What kind of sound will you create? That’s entirely up to you!

Kami-umezu Onidaiko Workshop

Onidaiko, which literally translates as “demon drumming,” is one of Sado Island’s iconic traditional performing arts. It’s an auspicious demon deity dance set to the beat of a taiko drum. At EC 2020, the members of Kami-umezu Onidaiko-gumi led this workshop online. This year, don’t miss your chance to come and experience this spirited dance in person!

Miyake Taiko Workshop (Workshop Full)

Miyake Taiko is known for its low stance, fluid movements, and powerful beats. While it became popular worldwide thanks to Kodo’s signature piece “Miyake,” this version finds its origin in the traditional “Miyake-jima Kamitsuki Mikoshi Taiko” upheld in the Kamitsuki Region of Miyake Island. Come and learn from the source, Miyake-jima Geino Doshi-kai—the locals who originally taught Kodo to play Miyake Taiko in the early ‘80s. It’s a full-body workout!

Good Morning Yoga

Start the day in a refreshing way by taking some time to focus on yourself, surrounded by nature at Shiroyama Park.

Let’s Draw Together! —From Drawing Pictures to Making Original Goods—

Come and draw with EC logo designer, illustrator Atsuko Ogawa. You’ll have a go at a range of drawing tasks, and receive a data file to keep of your favorite one. Have fun drawing and uncover your best work!
・With your data file, you’ll be able to create and order your own goods online, such as t-shirts and tote bags.
・If you like, you can order something during the workshop, which will be delivered to your house at a later date.
・The workshop fee does not include the price of any goods.

Beautiful Sea and Stunning Locations by Kayak

Love the great outdoors? Looking for a family-friendly activity during EC? Enjoy stunning natural views around the Ogi Peninsula from the water in a sea kayak. This geopark area has a wide range of places to explore from huge caves to secluded beaches.
There will be an instructor leading the way and beginners are very welcome.

Transport between Marine Plaza Ogi and Ogi Diving Center will be provided.

Puppet Theater at Shukunegi Community Hall

During the Meiji (1868–1912) and Taisho (1912–1925) Eras, puppet theater was a popular form of entertainment amongst the locals on Sado. Today, it’s still performed at many community festivals and performing arts events here on the island. Come and experience this wonderful art form live at EC 2022!

Harbour Market pops up for three days during Earth Celebration, transforming Ogi Port Park into a lively marketplace. Packed with stalls offering an eclectic array of food, drinks, handcrafts, clothing, and more, Harbour Market is always a fun place to hang out, meet people, and soak in the EC atmosphere.

Earth Celebration Fair in Ogi Shopping Street

The main shopping street in Ogi is a short walk from Ogi Port Park. Lined with traditional buildings, you’ll feel the rich history of this town just by strolling along the street. The local merchants will band together to bring the festive feel of EC to the arcade with a weekend fair.
Come and enjoy some friendly banter with the shopkeepers and other festivalgoers as you explore the stalls, stores, and more!

Sakai Kagura Dance

Kagura literally means “god entertainment.” It refers to the sacred music and dances used in Shinto rituals to entertantain the gods. These arts have a long history in Japan, spanning over two centuries. During one of its 2021 tours, Kodo crossed paths with Sakai Kagura Dance Preservation Society in mainland Niigata, and introduced them to EC. Join us as we welcome the Society to Sado Island for its first-ever EC performance!

Sado’s Performing Arts

Groups who uphold Sado Island’s performing arts, including onidaiko (demon drum dance), will travel door-to-door through the streets of Ogi, performing in front of homes in true festival style! Each group will end its tour at Kisaki Shrine with a performance on the Fringe stage. Come and enjoy the festive fun!

Niigata Taiko Teams

We launched a new initiative this year to get more taiko players in Niigata Prefecture involved in EC, helping us bring even more local flavor and good vibrations to the festival. Four teams answered our call to join in and we can’t wait to welcome them to EC 2022!
Each team will perform their own set on the Fringe stage at Kisaki Shrine, so you can enjoy their unique repertoire. On Aug. 20, three out of the teams will join Kodo on the Harbour Concert main stage to perform Kodo One Earth Music piece “Haruka." It’s going to be a wonderful collaboration!

During EC, Kodo Heartbeat Radio will be broadcast live from a pop-up booth at Marine Plaza Ogi. The hosts will welcome a range of their fellow Kodo members and special guests to share the excitement with you straight from the festival’s hub.
