MIYAVI x Hiromitsu Agatsuma x Kodo

MIYAVI x Hiromitsu Agatsuma x Kodo

For the grand finale of EC 2022, Kodo will be joined by two special guests: guitarist MIYAVI, making his EC debut; and shamisen player Hiromitsu Agatsuma, making his third appearance at EC. After appearing together at MIYAVI’s 2021 concert at Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera Temple, these three international artists will reunite at EC for their next, eagerly-awaited collaboration.

The sound of guitar, Tsugaru shamisen, and taiko are going to resonate around the globe when we gather to connect with the world on Sado Island this summer. May the sound bring everyone together, in person and in spirit.

MIYAVI

Miyavi is gaining recognition around the world for his "slap style," unconventional style of playing the electric guitar not with a pick, but with his fingers. He has 8 successful world tours under his belt, totaling more than 380 shows in about 30 countries.
In 2017, Miyavi became Japan's first official Goodwill Ambassador of UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).
In July 2019, he played the U.S. national anthem at the first-pitch ceremony of Major League Baseball at Dodger Stadium. His performance fascinated the audience and became a hot topic in both Japan and USA.
He also launched a new project "MIYAVI Virtual LIVE." Even during the coronavirus pandemic, he keeps on moving forward and uses streaming as a new form of expression.
In June 2020, he was featured in the advertisement of GUCCI's collection "Gucci Off the Grid collection," which was launched around the world, and became the first Japanese celebrity to be selected for GUCCI's advertisement.
The "Samurai Guitarist MIYAVI" who keeps on challenging new things in the world and carrying out his activities without stopping is one of the most promising artists in Japan.

Hiromitsu Agatsuma

Hiromitsu Agatsuma began studying the Tsugaru shamisen at the age of six. Since his early childhood, he frequented various shamisen competitions and won many prizes, subsequently receiving high recognition in the field of traditional Japanese music. His reputation grew as he ventured out into other genres of music such as jazz and rock.
He has had the privilege of representing Japan by performing at official receptions hosted by the Prime Minister.
He has composed the score for various scenes for stage, film, television and artist both in Japan and internationally. He also makes a great effort to pass the culture down to the next generation, and visits elementary schools all over Japan to teach the children how fun Japanese traditional music can be. Hiromitsu Agatsuma is a leader of the new generation shamisen players.

Kodo

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. Since the group’s debut at Berliner Festspiele in 1981, Kodo has given over 6,500 performances in 53 countries on five continents. Many of these performances were held under the “One Earth” banner, a theme that embodies Kodo’s desire to transcend language and cultural boundaries, all while reminding their audiences of the common bonds we all share as human beings. The ensemble also participates in a wide range of projects and events, which includes headlining major international festivals, contributing to motion picture soundtracks, and collaborating with artists and composers from myriad genres. Kodo's willingness to challenge preconceptions of music continues to produce startling new fusion and forms. The group’s creative activities, mission, and lifestyle based on Sado Island constantly garner attention from the global arts world and inspire artists in diverse fields.
